Reine des Fleurs: game review
I finished playing the Nintendo Switch version yesterday! Yay!! It’s one of my favorite otome games! I will try to avoid major spoilers in this review. It will only contain a few minor spoilers (I’m sorry in advance if you find my minor spoilers too revealing).
I’m really glad I finished this game! I started playing a few months ago and it took me a while to finish the first route. So a few weeks ago, I decided I was going to finish all the remaining routes.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A friend of mine who has been playing otome games for many years recommended me this game. I said: “Oh, OK!” but I had other games I wanted to play at that time. A few months later, I found the game on the Switch store.
I noticed that the artwork was really beautiful and the music was excellent! I fell in love with the opening! And I fell in love with the red haired guy with the stylish hair! “I want that one!” I decided.
Now that I had chosen my boy, all that was left was to buy the game. Luckily, I managed to do it shortly afterwards. Good thing, because I was already suffering from the urge to play this beautiful and fascinating game!
I would soon discover that the game was even more fascinating than I had imagined! :)
COMMON ROUTE
I was so excited at the start of the game! The MC was so pretty! I had fun getting to know the side characters.
But then the side characters wouldn’t shut up. I was looking forward to meeting the LIs and they didn’t show up! ;-;
The game makes a lot of mystery before the appearance of the LIs. And when they actually show up it’s a real event! It’s very exciting!!
At that moment I laughed a lot at Leon’s fun personality! I suspected his route would be funny. I just didn’t imagine the route would be so romantic, sexy and tragic!!
But needless to say, I only had eyes for Ghislain. At that time, I hadn’t played Diabolik Lovers yet and I didn’t know that his voice was the same as Subaru’s. It totally matches! ;)
But I had already played Shuuen no Virche and I didn’t identify that Leon’s voice was the same as Ankou’s! I think if I had noticed I would have fallen in love right away.
The common route is too slow. And I was already getting bored with the game system. When characters start long conversations they enter a “dialogue battle mode” where you have a few seconds to choose the right answer. Depending on the answer, the LI’s level of love or loyalty increases. This will later interfere with the endings you will get.
I decided to start playing blind. This bothered me a little, because when you use a guide you know that the common route will come to an end. Playing blind the common route seemed endless and I didn’t know how much time was left.
I was playing other games at the same time as I was playing Reine des Fleurs. So it took me a long time to finish the common route.
It takes time for important things to happen on the common route. But when they happen, it’s amazing!! It’s worth all the effort! There are powerful scenes!
GHISLAIN’S ROUTE
“Am I on Ghislain’s route?”
It took me a while to realize that I was. This is one of the magic of playing blind: you celebrate by making it to the route of your favorite LI by your own effort!
But getting a happy ending by playing blind is a tougher challenge.
Ghislain’s route didn’t disappoint me. One of my favorite scenes is the one with the horse, which appears in the opening. Violette climbs onto the horse with Ghislain, clinging to him to keep from falling. She realizes that she is very close to him and she is embarrassed. She voices these thoughts aloud and Ghislain is embarrassed too.
To this day I get very emotional remembering that scene. One day I want to play Ghislain’s route again to feel those emotions one more time. ♡
Ghislain is a tsundere and he is not good with women. It’s really cute to see his interactions with Violette. He is often angry to hide his embarrassment.
His route is very dramatic. Ghislain plays powerful music on the piano and that makes it even more exciting.
As expected, I got a bad ending. Ghislain has two good endings and eight bad endings. And I got one of his worst bad endings, with terrible and beautiful CGs.
This left me with a very strong impression of the game. I went to sleep that night feeling sad thinking about the bad ending. For the next few days I kept thinking about Ghislain.
I thought: “What a sad and beautiful bad ending! This game is so good! I love Ghislain! I dream of kissing him one day! Oh, I want to get to the kissing scene one day!”
But I didn’t have the energy and patience to traverse his route all over again right away using a guide. Then I played other games over the next few weeks.
But I have a poster of Ghislain on my bedroom wall. I looked at that poster every day thinking: “One day you will be mine!”
So one day I decided to play his route until the end. I got the two good endings and the remaining seven bad endings! Then I thought: “Why didn’t I do this sooner??”
Ghislain’s good endings made me very happy and fulfilled! But his bad endings are among the most terrible in the game, so it was pretty tough for me.
Ghislain is among the most popular LIs in the game. He’s as amazing as he looks!
I was so busy throughout the game admiring his mesmerizing eyes and hair that it took me a while to realize he has a scorpion on his shoulder lol!
Another scene that had me screaming is when he has tea with Violette and she orders him to eat the sweets. But this only happens at the end of the route, so you’ll have to work hard to get this prize! It’s totally cute and funny! ;)
ORPHEUS’ ROUTE
I chose Orpheus for my second route because I thought he was very pretty and cute!
Why do the LIs in this game have such perfect hair? The contrast between Orpheus’s white hair and the pink color of his eyes is stunning!
Orpheus plays the lyre and enjoys to stay in a giant bird cage in the garden. I was like: “Ohhhh! CAGE!! But Orpheus seems so nice. Is he really a yandere?”
I’ll just say that some exciting things happen inside that cage. ;)
Orpheus has wonderful romantic scenes!! Reine des Fleurs is the queen of romance! I don’t think I’ve ever seen another otome game with such powerful romance scenes!
Of course, the stunning CG art and music help a lot with the impact of the scenes, but that’s not all. The game has a very good timing, when the LI makes a surprise move towards the MC. Or sometimes it’s the other way around: she makes the moves! ^^
In addition to the brilliant voice acting, for me the dialogues make all the difference in the romance scenes. They really know how to say romantic things in this game!! And it’s really exciting when they talk dirty together lol.
Yes, there are steamy scenes in this game. They are spicy scenes filled with teasing and games of seduction. It’s FUCKING HOT!!!
I was very pleased with Orpheus’ good endings. Surprisingly, despite his innocent appearance, he really knows how to make a woman happy.
His bad endings weren’t too sad and his route overall was more or less predictable. But I wasn’t disappointed. Orpheus is still my second favorite LI.
What’s more, he’s voiced by KENN. Yeah, he’s a nice catch!
LEON’S ROUTE
Yes, let’s talk about Leon! HOLY SHIT WHAT A ROUTE!!!
The hug scene at the beginning of the common route made me laugh. And the apple scene made me laugh even harder!
He’s the poster boy, so I didn’t expect much from him. But Leon surprised me.
He is VERY VERY VERY romantic! He looks pretty clumsy in the common route. But in his own route he is a perfect gentleman, a true prince!
I don’t even know how to explain the high level of the scenes. Well, he’s voiced by Ankou’s voice actor, so just hearing that voice makes me shiver with excitement.
Leon’s CGs and romance scenes were perhaps the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in an otome game. Among all LIs, in my opinion the chemistry between Leon and Violette is the best of all.
Leon’s love ending shocked me. It’s very sad, although with some positive things. I would say it is bittersweet. I liked it a lot!!
He is the LI with the most endings in the game: 13. After getting the loyalty ending, I got the 11 bad endings in a row. It was one of the most fun otome nights of my life.
His bad endings are very sad and shocking. Not all, but some. I was tired, hungry and sleepy, but I managed to conquer all that tragedy. When I finished everything it was already morning and I was almost hallucinating lol. Those who followed my live tweets saw my distraught state. ;)
My heart was pounding in Leon’s route! My God, that lake scene!! Violette didn’t want to show her bare feet in front of a man. But Leon took off her shoes, carried her in his arms and helped her to cross the lake. And after that something very exciting happened!! Wow! Just remembering it makes me emotional. ;-;
Leon is an exciting poster boy. On a similar level to Yves from Shuuen no Virche, I would say. Both really know how to be romantic. And they go to the extreme for the woman they love.
LOUIS’ ROUTE
Oh, Louis, Louis….
So handsome, calm voice, a perfect gentleman. But I’m sorry, he’s a RED FLAG!!!
No, I’m not sorry, I love he’s a red flag lmao
Basically, he’s a bastard who likes to play kissing games. The kissing scenes on his route are CRAZY!! There are many, one better and crazier than the other, in the most unusual contexts!
He knows how to handle a woman. This motherfucker is experienced! He knows what women like! He does that… voice. Holy shit, just thinking about it makes me flustered!
Expect a lot of steamy scenes on his route. There’s that CG on the bed…ahhhhh!! *-*
At first I didn’t care much for Louis. He just looked like a calm gentleman, like Orpheus. But the two are very different! While Louis isn’t among my favorite LIs, his route is one of the best in the game. Because of the steamy and because of that exciting and surprising ending.
SECRET ROUTE
Come on, everybody knows who the secret route is. It’s pretty obvious. But I won’t say the guy’s name just in case someone doesn’t know yet and prefers to keep the mysterious atmosphere.
The secret route only unlocks when you finish the first four routes. So, even though it was obvious, even I was wondering if there really was such a secret route.
I mean, I knew there would be something with him in the game. At the time I still didn’t know if his route was a true full route or a fake route or something.
I’ll leave it to you to find out what the secret route is all about: how far it goes.
However, I’ll just say this is the steamiest route in the game. If you’ve waited this long and found Louis’ route has little steamy, know that things will take it to the next level here. Especially on loyalty ending. You will see some skin.
He is one of the hottest guys in the game and one of the most popular characters. In most routes the MC is more passive, but in this route she is very active.
If you like a MC with a high sex drive throwing herself at the guy she loves, this route is for you! I loved it! :3
This route also has a lot of romance and drama. After all, we are talking about Reine des Fleurs. There is romance and drama everywhere.
There are sad scenes and big revelations on this route. But there are also happy and beautiful things!! I was totally awwww at the love ending! =^_^=
MC: VIOLETTE
Violette is one of my favorite MCs. She seems like a bit of a kuudere at the start of the game and at many moments throughout the game. She eventually shows emotions and it’s also exciting when it happens.
She appears serious and indifferent at times, but she has a good heart. I love it when the “ice queen” melts. I love it how the LIs love her.
The MC and the LIs have a very strong connection and this has a lot to do with the game story.
GAME STORY
I’ve focused more on the LIs so far. The highlight of Reine des Fleurs is that it has a lot of romance. And the romance is top-notch!
But the story of the game is also excellent! In my opinion, the story does a lot to make the romance so powerful.
The MC is a queen and the LIs must swear an oath of allegiance to her. But this is not just any oath. In the game there is a power called Grace, which maintains the balance of the world. And there is a connection of energies to move Grace between the countries that each knight represents.
I won’t go into detail about the game’s story here. Even because most of the game’s major spoilers involve the story.
I will just say that the story is very good and that it has a lot to do with the strength of love between the characters.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Game strengths: excellent story, great LIs, wonderful MC, lots of romance. Breathtaking art and music.
Game weaknesses: weird game system (those “dialogue battles”). Long common route, although some people like that. Lots of long and unnecessary conversations with side characters.
A peculiarity of this game is that it has 50 different endings, mostly bad endings. I finished the game in a little over 50 hours. Because of the long common route and so many endings I thought the game would last longer.
Some feel that 50 endings is excessive and unnecessary. I thought so too and I was really annoyed by having to do so many saves (I had to do ten saves on Leon’s route) and constantly looking at the guide to get all the endings.
On the other hand, now I feel very proud that I managed to get so many endings. I felt like I had accomplished something big, like climbing Mount Everest, after getting Leon’s 11 bad endings in a row (it took me five hours). I felt a lot of adrenaline when I finished, it was really good!
So there are good and bad sides to having so many endings. Even the weird game system has exciting moments. Although it causes a break in the pace of the game, it can also generate happiness after getting the right answers in the time limit.
A common question: are the 50 endings similar or repetitive? Some of them are, but many are not. I felt that the people who made the game put some effort into making different and interesting endings, some even with CGs.
And some bad endings are really sad. If you like dramatic bad endings this game is for you. Even some good endings have sad parts.
But if you don’t like bad endings, just take the good endings and that’s fine. With only the good endings you can have a fine game experience, as they are great.
Do I recommend this game? YES! It is in my top 5 favorite otome games at the time of writing this review.
I’ve heard of people who played the entire game and didn’t like it. This has already happened with other excellent games, such as Shuuen no Virche. And Diabolik Lovers, for more predictable reasons. I have yet to meet a person who has played Jakou no Lyla and didn’t like it. But it can happen.
